- Yang Pass Desert Resort -
"Let's finish another cup of wine, my dear sir, Out west past the Yangguan, old friends there'll be none."
—— (Tang dynasty) Wang Wei

With its unique setting on the Silk Road, Dunhuang quickly flourished into one of the most diverse places in Ancient China. Yang Pass was one of the most important mountain pass that was used as an outpost in the colonial dominions adjacent to ancient China.Today, it is still a fascinating place where people come to explore spectacular cave temples and historic sites, or take in the magnificent sweep of the Gobi Desert on adventurous days out. It is in this vast desert that we will create a comfortable oasis for our visiting guests.

The resort consists of three boutique hotels, a service center, an independent luxury hotel, and a dorm. We retained several original grape drying rooms on the site as an opportunity to extend human activities. The site, which is slightly raised up step by step after human intervention, can ensure an excellent view of each building.

Materials we chose not just for their inherent beauty and low maintenance but for their indigenous qualities as well. For example, the copper for window and handrail is mined in desert; rammed earth walls made of soil excavated from the site rise up from the desert floor echoing the forms of the surrounding mountain range; the unique roof "window" is inspired by Ayiwang, the traditional form of local architecture. The result is a village that is truly in harmony with it's site and is expressive of it's unique place in the world.
