- Sanggan River Resort -
Dongshawo Village is located a few miles east of Datong County, Shanxi Province. It is a small village with less than 500 people and 3,000 acres of arable land. The entire village's houses, courtyard walls and roads are made of a special kind of black stone (called "pumice" by locals), which is actually a volcanic rock formed by the condensation of magma erupted by a volcano hundreds of thousands of years ago. The surface of the stone is rough, the interior is porous, and the texture is hard. Many years ago, a clever ancestor discovered that it was suitable for building houses and walls, so generation after generation used local materials to build this stone village.
It is the walls that tell us the history of the place. There are different layers of intervention and it is always possible to read backwards, in time, because the past is transparent. The walls now in ruins creat the pattern of the village. Therefore, I obtained clues about the actual state of architecture in the village from the field research in Dongshawo Village, which is commonly known as the "village impression". This is also one of the characteristic images that remains even after leaving the venue. Therefore, in the adjacent first-phase construction project, I tried to use elements in the buildings with different functions on the site through disassembly to jointly complete the memory reconstruction of the "new" settlement.
This is a place where time seems to have slowed down, where wind-worn stone walls and fancy hotel create a symphony of nature. Sanggan River Resort is the confluence of past and present, where rural authenticity meets modern comfort.
