- FLYING STALL -
Over 60 million people are displaced today. More than at any time in the last 70 years. In fact, it is hard to believe that half of all refugees are children. But most troubling of all is that only 20 percent of those children have educational opportunity. All refugee children told reporters that education is the most important thing in their lives, because it allows them to think of their future, rather than the nightmare of their past. They don’t mind playing in the mud at all, but they are desperate for knowledge. I recall a recent article in Newsweek writing about a boy named Hany who is now living in a Syrian refugee camp in northern Iraq. His home has been destroyed and some of his families were killed. Fortunately, he and his parents, and his little sister managed to flee before all hell breaking loose. He told the reporter that he didn’t hesitate to take his high school diploma when his life was in imminent danger. ‘I took my high school diploma because my life depended on it.’
As an architecture student, my goal is to create a possible and flexible space for those children to learn and play, which may provide more opportunities for them to receive education, and to see the silver lining. I do not expect, I just want to reveal or provide a secret ‘exit’ to the brighter future.
